Replacement of Quicksort in java.util.Arrays with new Dual-Pivot Quicksort

Hello All, I'd like to share with you new Dual-Pivot Quicksort which is faster than the known implementations (theoretically and experimental). I'd like to propose to replace the JDK's Quicksort implementation by new one. Description ----------- The classical Quicksort algorithm uses the following scheme: 1. Pick an element P, called a pivot, from the array. 2. Reorder the array so that all elements, which are less than the pivot, come before the pivot and all elements greater than the pivot come after it (equal values can go either way). After this partitioning, the pivot element is in its final position. 3. Recursively sort the sub-array of lesser elements and the sub-array of greater elements. The invariant of classical Quicksort is: [ <= p | >= p ] There are several modifications of the schema: [ < p | = p | > p ] or [ = p | < p | > p | = p ] But all of them use *one* pivot. The new Dual-Pivot Quicksort uses *two* pivots elements in this manner: 1. Pick an elements P1, P2, called pivots from the array. 2. Assume that P1 <= P2, otherwise swap it. 3. Reorder the array into three parts: those less than the smaller pivot, those larger than the larger pivot, and in between are those elements between (or equal to) the two pivots. 4. Recursively sort the sub-arrays. The invariant of the Dual-Pivot Quicksort is: [ < P1 | P1 <= & <= P2 } > P2 ] The new Quicksort is faster than current implementation of Quicksort in JDK (L. Bentley and M. Douglas McIlroy) and classical Quicksort. The most interesting is BentleyBasher test framework. It runs battery of tests for all cases: { 100, 1000, 10000, 1000000 } x { sawtooth, rand, stagger, plateau, shuffle } x { ident, reverse, reverse_front, reverse_back, sort, dither} where 100, ... , 1000000 - array length sawtooth: x[i] =i%m rand: x[i] = rand() % m stagger: x[i] = (i*m + i) % n plateau: x[i] = min(i, m) shuffle: x[i] = rand()%m? Full mathematical proof see in attached proof.txt and proof_add.txt files. Theoretical results are also confirmed by experimental counting of the operations. BufferedOutputStream does not throw exception after it's closed

Hello, Find a similar problem with the one in the last mail(BufferedWriter), this time is BufferedOutputStream, and it has a delegated output stream and behave the same with BufferedWriter, I believe the two problems are just the same - it needs to check the open status before store the contents even if it does not need to flush. https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/show_bug.cgi?id=100057 GetJavaProperties has a stack-allocated fixed size buffer for holding a copy of a string returned by setlocale(3). However, there is no guarantee that the string will fit into this buffer. This one is probably due to Solaris code being reused for Linux. The patch has been in IcedTea for a long while. Making java.util.Iterator.remove() for the iterators for EnumSet more resilient

The Javadoc for java.util.Iterator.remove() states that the behaviour of the method is "unspecified" if the underlying collection has been modified. Ideally, Iterator.remove() would be resilient - which is to say, it would not modify the underlying collection if the element to be removed has already been removed from the collection. In the general case, I can see the rationale behind the Javadoc defining things the way they are - it would be overly onerous to require resilient behaviour on iterators for all types of collection. However, in the specific case of the iterators for java.util.EnumSet, I believe it is simple to implement them such that their remove() method does behave in the resilient manner described above. Given that it's basicaly as easy for these to behave resiliently as for them not to, I believe to would be beneficial to change them to be resilient in this fashion. To that end, please find attached a zip file containing a webrev which modifies the Iterators for EnumSet (specifically java.util.RegularEnumSet.EnumSetIterator and java.util.JumboEnumSet.EnumSetIterator) so that they are resilient, together with a couple of testcases to demonstrate the enhancement. I have searched the Java Bug Database, but have not found a bug (or RFE) relating to this item. Therefore, I'm unsure if I should raise an RFE for it there or in the OpenJDK bugzilla. Since closing one closes the other, I treated them as peers and I didn't unroll the FileOutputStream and its channel into separate resource variables. However, I'm flexible on this. * test/java/io/OutputStreamWriter/Encode.java Pretty clearly a ServerSocket is a distinct resource from a Socket returned from the accept() call. However, does Socket.getInputStream() represent a distinct resource from the Socket? In this case it seemed most sensible to unroll them into separate resource variables, but again I could go either way on this. * test/java/io/PrintStream/FailingConstructors.java Please check over my NIO usage here. Hm, I did more conversion here than in the other FailingConstructors tests (see webrev for 7021209). How to find IBM's contributions?

To the community, Is there any easily identifiable way to determine when IBM contributes fixes/patches to the repositories? I know all Oracle employees have Oracle email addresses. What about those from IBM? I was hoping to see what they contribute since they joined OpenJDK. Thanks! Paul
