PSS (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proportional_set_size) gives a good view on actual memory used by a process.

cat /proc/<pid>/smaps_rollup | grep ^Pss:

There are also a number of top-like tools (e.g. smem, psmem.py) that shows PSS.
