[OpenJDK 2D-Dev] what is X11FontScaler?

You mean X11FontScaler.c ? It is (no surprise, surely?) used when
needed to ask X11 to scale fonts. Its used instead of freetype when
a font is only available via X11.

I am not sure why you can't find where its being referenced in the Java 
sources,
since it definitely is ..
