I apologize - I missed many of your emails as they auto-sort into my JDK 
folders that I don't check very often these days.  I'll have to work out 
better sorting filters.

Also, I'd like to point out that there may not be many people who can 
devote time to these efforts right now, but that doesn't mean that 
nobody is interested in seeing performance gains on this code, so I hope 
you don't get discouraged.  I'll answer some of your specific questions 
in other emails...
