I reviewed this at the time and I was unhappy about the scale of
changes to shared code. The existing code puts -DARM in the sysdefs to
'borrow' from the Oracle closed port. Is this actually broken in some
way?

There was a lengthy review with Andrew Haley which did not reach any
conclusion.

This one seems to have slipped by. I need to take another look at it.
