OpenJDK 8 adoption in Fedora and Debian Linux distributions

Hi,

with JDK 8 out of the door, Linux distributions like Fedora and Debian
are looking to package it, and maybe even migrate to it in their future
releases. A part of what packagers do when they introduce a new major
version of the JDK into their operating systems is to try to 'rebuild
the world from source' to try to shake out possible issues using the new
JDK - accordingly they tend to find slightly different issues from
developers testing how well their projects run on a new JDK version.

You can track the progress of the Fedora packagers on the java-devel
mailing list in a thread starting at
https://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/java-devel/2014-April/005187.html
, and the efforts of the Debian packagers in a thread starting on the
debian-java list here:
https://lists.debian.org/debian-java/2014/04/msg00092.html

For the purposes of extending our successful QA outreach to a broader
set of FOSS projects, I think those development libraries, which have
been indicated in both efforts as requiring a second look wrt to
building and running flawlessly with JDK 8, would be a great pool to
consider reaching out to, and encourage to test early and regularly on
upcoming JDK releases.

cheers,
