Using $ to mark a variable name is a tradition that goes way back, and is
familiar to many.
There is no need to make all languages the same, but reducing the
difference diminishes the cost of transitioning.
But then, in a brazillian ABNT2 keyboard, \ is an easily accessible key,
and $ requires pressing shift.
So maybe in this case things will balance out in the end, at least for me.
