Looks like the fix is quite belated. Here is the latest version.
Changes include:

1. Suggestions expressed by the reviewers of the fix.

2. Critical tests now pass when executed on the Cygwin X server with 
their "native" window manager (specifically, the NetBeans IDE runs fine).

3. Added enough logging for debugging purposes.

4. Various insignificant improvements and clean-ups.
