I should add that this is a retarded testcase, but at least minimal and
fairly reliable.

I have seen this problem in the real world, where it was only blowing up
very unreliably (preferably it happens in production of course), and
when it did, it was *very* difficult to reproduce and debug. It would
help a ton if it would blow up early to save headaches.
