Back in 2009 we made the same fix for Java SE 6. I'm not sure why that change never made it's way to our contribution to OpenJDK, but it's definitely correct to use the ' ' space character. I also suspect that kMenuSpaceGlyph is from Carbon, which is probably why it was commented out in the OpenJDK commit.
