In general, if you want to deep dive into the make tree, you should  
first build the whole thing first.
The individual makefiles do not include the building of all the  
dependencies, the expectation is that
the makefiles were run in a particular order. Once the build is  
primed, then you can zero in on the
part of the make tree of interest.
Certain dependencies are just assumed to exist.
