configure error with freetype (again)

If this is causing pain, and there isn't a simple workaround, then we
could attempt to pull in 72ef61df77e5, and its ancestors directly into tl.
There are only a few ancestor changesets, which have changes in multiple
repositories. Or sync in the whole build forest, there couldn't be much
in there since b113.
