[Newbie question] Strange errors trying to build the JDK

And if you try to execute

/usr/bin/nm --defined-only *.o

in a directory containing the .o files, does it work?

I think you need to manually try each command to see what may be going 
wrong. Or edit the makefile to get rid of the piping and use a temporary 
file instead.

And verify that even the basic

$(CD) $(JVM_OUTPUTDIR)/objs

works.
