I think it can be a good idea to start with using an external library, as is done in this PR. For all our other bundled libraries, we also always support the option of building with the "system" library instead of the bundled one, so this code will still be required.

If we should push this PR first, and then add the source in a separate PR, or if we should bake everything together (both external library and bundled sources) into a single PR, I cannot say. But I expect it is easier to take it piece-wise.
