NFS is not involved in Max build problem it could be that it just works
on NFS.
Since NFS is important to you, perhaps you could give it a try and test
the build?

source = local disk      build artifacts = local disk
source = nfs                build artifacts = local disk
source = nfs                build artifacts = nfs

If  NFS is a problem, then I will simply move the locking file to /tmp.
Trivial.
