Yeah, we have not really implemented proper pkg check support. :( There 
are calls like PKG_CHECK_MODULES sprinkled in the source, but I don't 
think anyone's ever tested them. Also, as you say, if we really wanted 
to support that, we need to make sure we don't fail before we get to the 
pkg check command.
