That sounds very high. I can't really understand why a simpe redirection 
should incur that kind of performance penalty.

I just tested on my (high-end) linux workstation:
A normal build took 6:29 with the log wrapper, and 6:37 (!) without.

To answer the theoretical question: if the log wrapper would add 10% to 
the build time, then it would not be acceptable. But I highly doubt that 
it does.
