Message-ID: <63bb12330809012237j14158768gf4d67ecaf84845e6@mail.gmail.com> Hi everyone , I'm just going crazy from the java.lang.NullPointerException , have any one at sun or the openJDK community thought about adding more information to this error ? for example : package test; /** * * @author alaa */ public class NullHell { /** * @param args the command line arguments */ public static void main(String[] args) { // TODO code application logic here Integer a=50; Integer b=100; System.out.println("A+B:"+ ( a +b)); } } ======This code is working fine========= A+B:150 Now change the a to null like this: Integer a=null; Now, rerun the appliction and sure you get this : Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException at test.NullHell.main(NullHell.java:22) Java Result: 1 And here you can't tell where is the error . (which one is null a or b ?) ======================== Wouldn't be nice if they could tell something like this Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException(A==null) at test.NullHell.main(NullHell.java:22) another example like , getCusomers().getOrders().getOrderByID(100).getOrderItem(0); , when u get NullPointerException in such a line, you have to go debug customers, orders , order Item and so on. You can't tell which method from those returning the null ! Any thoughts about this ? And what with this primitive forum that you can't format your code in it !!! The JVM allows almost total freedom, at the bytecode level, for forming names of methods, fields, and classes. So far so good. If a language (say, Lisp, Smalltalk, Ruby, or Scala) wants to encode its names directly in the JVM, it runs into two problems. The first is the small number of remaining restrictions on JVM bytecode names; this can easily be overcome by lightweight mangling as outlined in this blog post: http://blogs.sun.com/jrose/entry/symbolic_freedom_in_the_vm The second problem is the fact that the language runtime is probably written largely in Java, which means that the "exotic" names in the language cannot be directly implemented by Java classes, methods, and fields. In practice, this difficulty forces language implementors to mangle their names not for the JVM (which is permissive) but for Java (which is restrictive). The solution to the second problem is to provide an "escape" syntax (similar to that of Lisp and other languages) which allows an arbitrary string to pass through the language scanner as a simple identifier token instead of some other token (or an unscannable mess). We propose the syntax #"foo". See example implementation here and enclosed in this message: http://hg.openjdk.java.net/mlvm/mlvm/langtools/file/tip/quid.patch The javac frontend should accept any quoted string immediately following '#' (with no intervening space), interpreting normal string escape sequences, and taking the resulting string exactly as the spelling of a normal identifier. Keywords like 'int' should not be recognized. Strings which risk being illegal at the JVM level must be rejectedi immediately; this simply means rejecting the empty string and strings which contain any of the characters "/.;<>[". This design is neutral toward mangling schemes but supports the one described in the blog entry mentioned above. FCM and recently BGGA closures have used the following syntax to reference a method (aka eta expansion): ClassName#methodName(ParamTypes) or a field: ClassName#fieldName In addition, the class name (at least in FCM) can be implied based on context: #methodName(ParamTypes) #fieldName This syntax has now become pretty widely used in the context of the closures debate and, in general, I have found references to be very popular and not as controversial as closures. While the #" syntax does distinguish this proposal from the above technically, it is far less clear in terms of readability or to a typical developer (two similar syntaxes with widely differing meanings). Is there no alternative syntax? Stephen John Rose wrote: > Each language has its own rules for forming identifiers of functions, > variables, and types. Yes, we don't want to grab any single ASCII characters - instead we're grabbing a sequence of two ASCII characters: '#' '"'. Using '"' as the second of those is convenient, because it makes it obvious that string escapes are allowed - but we can allow string escapes even if we use another delimiter. As an old Lisper/Schemer, something like this \|class| looks more natural. You'd still allow string escape sequences - to generate "|\n|" you could write: \|\|\n\|| Ugly, but that's an extreme example, of course. -- --Per Bothner per.bothner at sun.com per at bothner.com http://per.bothner.com/ From Per.Bothner at Sun.COM Tue Sep 9 15:50:31 2008 From: Per.Bothner at Sun.COM (Per Bothner) Date: Tue, 09 Sep 2008 15:50:31 -0700 Subject: [patch] 6746458 support for exotic identifiers (identifier superquote) In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <48C6FDB7.2070208@sun.com> John Rose wrote: > The javac frontend should accept any quoted string immediately following > '#' (with no intervening space), interpreting normal string escape > sequences, and taking the resulting string exactly as the spelling of a > normal identifier. Other languages can *not* follow the JVM restrictions, so if the JVM disallows certain characters, the compilers for those languages have to mangle those characters into something the JVM can understand. John in his blog posted a suggested standard mangling for those characters. It would be friendly if javac could implement that same mangling, if it truly becomes a standard. That way people using the #"xxx" syntax don't have to learn the allowed/disallowed rules of the JVM, and they don't have to mangle those names by hand. For Scheme, a exotically-named division method would be named #"\\|" in Java code instead of /. Allow me to be the first to retch. Yes, there are three layers of quoting there, but it's still passably legible to humans and easy to emit by source code generators. BTW, regarding \|...|, we certainly could define a new kind of delimited string-like token, but the virtue of reusing double quotes is that tools (like colorizing editors) either DTRT out of the box, or are easy to adapt, by reusing pre-existing scanner rules. -- John From eamonn.mcmanus at sun.com Wed Sep 10 04:38:03 2008 From: eamonn.mcmanus at sun.com (eamonn.mcmanus at sun.com) Date: Wed, 10 Sep 2008 11:38:03 +0000 Subject: hg: jdk7/tl/jdk: 6734813: Provide a way to construct an ObjectName without checked exceptions; ... So I showed how the cost of not auto-mangling names like "/" is non- zero but tolerable. The other missing bit is the cost of auto-mangling. It is painful, even (this is a big "even") if everyone were to use my mangling scheme. Two reasons: 1. My mangling scheme disallows dollar '$" (at your suggestion) as a dangerous character, so the set of extended identifiers would not be a superset of regular identifiers. This feels very surprising. 2. My mangling scheme reserves the colon ':' as a delimiter for building compound names, more complex than a simple sequence of unicode characters. If we auto-mangled, those compound names would be inaccessible to Java code. This again feels surprising. On balance, let's take the small legibility hit in the Java source and keep the channel down to the JVM as simple as possible, allowing the possibility of '$' and compound names. -- John P.S. More about compound names: Most complicated languages have use cases for compound names, names which express not only a simple spelling, but something modal about how the name is being used or defined. Java has a field-vs-method distinction baked into the bytecodes. But a field-vs-property distinction would have to be expressed with a compound name. Also, languages which allow abbreviated or curried method references which look like field references (mylist.size or let f = mylist.get in f (10)) need a way to express the choice between a field and a method, in a context where the JVM doesn't supply a baked-in distinction: Compound names can sometimes help with this. Or, Common Lisp features package prefixed names and SETF-names; encoding them requires compound names, either in the generic mangling scheme, or in another language-specific mangling built on top of the Unicode-to-JVM mangling. In either case, an implementor might consider using #"CL:CONS" and #"CL:CAR:SETF" as bytecode names. (A loadable module could be a class which defines a bunch of names like that, and they could be imported, bean-like, into the Common Lisp runtime without further information.) It's slightly better for the Common Lisp implementor if the shared mangling package supports compound names. It's decisively better on the whole, if every language implementor gets that same benefit. Anyway, i'm not sure it's a good idea to change the Java spec in order to be able to call a method with a non Java name. Why don't just use a bridge method ? Lot of languages perform some convertions of arguments before calling their methods, in my opinion, exotic identifiers support is just a part of that adaptation process. Calling a non-Java method from Java without adaptation seems to be a great idea but not very practical. cheers, R?mi From John.Rose at Sun.COM Wed Sep 10 23:13:41 2008 From: John.Rose at Sun.COM (John Rose) Date: Wed, 10 Sep 2008 23:13:41 -0700 Subject: [patch] 6746458 support for exotic identifiers (identifier superquote) In-Reply-To: <48C8580C.9030400@univ-mlv.fr> References: <48C6FDB7.2070208@sun.com> <48C70483.7030106@sun.com> <48C70C46.2090304@sun.com> <48C8580C.9030400@univ-mlv.fr> Message-ID: <4DA17EE9-A32F-4C24-8C78-ACF003C7C34A@sun.com> On Sep 10, 2008, at 4:28 PM, R?mi Forax wrote: > Anyway, i'm not sure it's a good idea to change the Java spec > in order to be able to call a method with a non Java name. > Why don't just use a bridge method ? Then how do you write the bridge method? You'd have to apt it into the class file. And then you'd need another mangling convention to relate the Java name to the actual name. It's simpler to make these things direct. Since the JVM supports such names, and since Java is the system programming language for the JVM (isn't it?), let Java support those names. > Lot of languages perform some convertions of arguments > before calling their methods, in my opinion, > exotic identifiers support is just a part of that adaptation process. But it's a separable part. And I think the trend with JSR 292 is to make dynlang call sites look more like Java call sites, reducing the amount of adaptation required. This does raise the question of how to emit the extended call bytecodes from javac (if at all). Not an easy question, but a simple low-level solution would be worthwhile. -- John -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Which seems to suggest that the standard behavior is not to add the destination directory to the classpath; as a consequence your second compilation must fail, as javac cannot find any class/sources under ./x/ It seems like your Linux box with the latest openjdk build is not behaving as expected - as it ends up in adding the destination directory to your classpath. But I might be wrong. FYI, under Ubuntu 8.04 your commands fail using both openjdk-6 and 1.6.0_06 compilers. Jon, any ideas? Ok, now I got what you mean. Have you tried printing all the search path being used by your javac? You can do that by adding the '-verbose' option. At the very beginning of your output you should have an entry for $JM/classes; if you don't have that entry that means that $JM/classes is not used as a search path for classes (in that case it could be a simple problem due to the way in which javac is launched, e.g. bootclasspath is not specified properly).
