Thus @Things({@Thing(1), @Thing(2)}) could be replaced with @Thing(1) @Thing(2) 2. Rather than forcing a separate container annotation @ContainerAnnotation(Things.class) @interface Thing {int value();} @interface Things {Thing[] value();} you could just specify that the base annotation can repeat: @Repeatable @interface Thing {int value();} and introduce List AnnotatedElement.getAnnotations(Class) and the like. (The singleton variants would just return one of the annotations if more than one were present.) This would seem more intuitive to me, and obviate various open design issues. The approach proposed in the JEP largely reduces to a previously solved case and does not require any modifications at the JVM-level, only in the compiler and the core library code. Additionally, the existing work arounds for the absence of repeated annotations can be smoothly migrated to use the new language idiom. -Joe From jesse.glick at oracle.com Thu Jan 5 13:17:04 2012 From: jesse.glick at oracle.com (Jesse Glick) Date: Thu, 05 Jan 2012 16:17:04 -0500 Subject: JEP 120: Repeating Annotations In-Reply-To: <4F0605F8.7000704@oracle.com> References: <20111101221128.73CFD2E80@eggemoggin.niobe.net> <4F0605F8.7000704@oracle.com> Message-ID: On 01/05/2012 03:20 PM, Joe Darcy wrote: >> @Repeatable >> @interface Thing {int value();} > > ...how the repeated annotations are represented in a class file The same way multiple annotations of different types are - just as separate entries that happen to use the same type_index. (JVMS3-DRAFT-20090512.pdf section 4.7.16) In fact I cannot find anything in the draft VM spec, or JSR 175 materials, that says it is not permitted to have repeating annotations in class files of current version! Given the program import java.lang.annotation.Retention; import java.lang.annotation.RetentionPolicy; @Retention(RetentionPolicy.RUNTIME) @interface Stuff1st {} import java.lang.annotation.Retention; import java.lang.annotation.RetentionPolicy; @Retention(RetentionPolicy.RUNTIME) @interface Stuff2nd {} import java.lang.annotation.Annotation; @Stuff1st @Stuff2nd public class Annotest { public static void main(String[] x) { for (Annotation a : Annotest.class.getAnnotations()) { System.out.println(a); } } } if you compile it and then replace "2nd" with "1st" in Annotest.class with a text editor and then run, you get an AnnotationFormatError from sun.reflect.annotation.AnnotationParser.parseAnnotations2 but this seems safely within the core library code. In fact the current AnnotationParser behavior is arguably a bug - it is enforcing a constraint not mentioned in the JVM spec. Deleting this check and making Class.annotations a multimap would seem to be all you need on the runtime side. (List getAnnotations(Class) and the like would be convenient but not strictly necessary.) On the language/compiler side, you would just need to relax section 9.7 of the JLS "if a declaration is annotated with more than one annotation for a given annotation type" to say "...unless that annotation type is annotated with @Repeatable". This seems a simpler change than what the JEP currently proposes. > existing workarounds for the absence of repeated annotations can be smoothly migrated to use the new language idiom Migration to @Repeatable would be just as smooth for users of an existing annotation, whereas code interpreting an annotation - far less common - is hardly burdened by searching for multiples. In the case of a newly designed annotation intended for use with a new source level, @Repeatable avoids the need to add an extra documented type to a public API. I do not think this is a terribly important issue, just trying to understand the motivation for the current design decision. To state this more precisely, how are repeating annotations in a class file represented in such a way that existing clients of logically repeating annotations behave sensibly and that other consumers of class files don't have to have extensive modifications. > > On the language/compiler side, you would just need to relax section > 9.7 of the JLS "if a declaration is annotated with more than one > annotation for a given annotation type" to say "...unless that > annotation type is annotated with @Repeatable". I disagree. Code cannot reliably migrate to use repeating annotations unless the code that interprets the repeating annotation is ready to deal with them. There is a long-standing workaround for the lack of repeating annotations. I believe any solution to repeating annotations that did not acknowledge and leverage this situation is unlikely to have speedy adoption. > In the case of a newly designed annotation intended for use with a new > source level, @Repeatable avoids the need to add an extra documented > type to a public API. Back in Java SE 5, the JSR 175 expert group explicitly choose not to allow repeating annotations. If adding this feature was being done in Java SE 6 rather than Java SE 8, less weight could be given to prior practice. -Joe From alan.bateman at oracle.com Fri Jan 6 07:01:57 2012 From: alan.bateman at oracle.com (alan.bateman at oracle.com) Date: Fri, 06 Jan 2012 15:01:57 +0000 Subject: hg: jdk8/tl/jdk: 7127235: (fs) NPE in Files.walkFileTree if cached attributes are GC'ed Message-ID: <20120106150224.844CE478CF@hg.openjdk.java.net> Changeset: 400cc379adb5 Author: alanb Date: 2012-01-06 15:00 +0000 URL: http://hg.openjdk.java.net/jdk8/tl/jdk/rev/400cc379adb5 7127235: (fs) NPE in Files.walkFileTree if cached attributes are GC'ed Reviewed-by: forax, chegar ! src/share/classes/java/nio/file/FileTreeWalker.java From jesse.glick at oracle.com Fri Jan 6 09:48:28 2012 From: jesse.glick at oracle.com (Jesse Glick) Date: Fri, 06 Jan 2012 12:48:28 -0500 Subject: JEP 120: Repeating Annotations In-Reply-To: <4F0632FD.6000605@oracle.com> References: <20111101221128.73CFD2E80@eggemoggin.niobe.net> <4F0605F8.7000704@oracle.com> <4F0632FD.6000605@oracle.com> Message-ID: On 01/05/2012 06:32 PM, Joe Darcy wrote: > other consumers of class files don't have to have extensive modifications. This does not feel like "extensive modifications", especially if compared to other likely class file changes such as for lambdas, but it is true that it is a change when compared to JDK 7 (at least when restricted to class files produced by javac). > any solution to repeating annotations that did not acknowledge and leverage this situation is unlikely to have speedy adoption. Well assuming that the code which reads the annotation (elt.getAnnotation(Thing.class)) is in the same overall source project as the definition of the annotation itself (Thing.java), which is typical, and assuming that this feature is targeted for JDK 8, there are several cases: 1. The defining/consuming code is using JDK 5, 6, or 7 as a baseline. Then it cannot use either @Repeatable or @Container (these would not even be available to compile against), so cannot be changed at all, even if the annotating code (@Things({...}) class C {}) is happy with assuming JDK 8+. 2. The def/cons code compiles against JDK 8 but uses -source/-target 5-7 and uses e.g. animal-sniffer to avoid unintentional use of JDK 8+ APIs. Probably it could add @Rep/@Cont to the annotation definition, assuming nothing inside this project is itself annotated. Other annotating code could use @Thing @Thing if using JDK 8+, but would still have to use @Things if retaining 5-7 compatibility. The consuming code in the case of @Cont looks for both @Thing and @Things as in #1; in the case of @Rep it looks for @Things and/or repeated @Thing (filtering elt.getAnnotations() rather than elt.getAnnotation(Thing.class)) - a few extra lines of code. 3. The def/cons code uses JDK 8 as a baseline, and annotating code does too. In the case of @Cont, @Things still has to be defined, and the consuming code still has to look for @Thing and/or @Things; in the case of @Rep, the consuming code just looks for repeated @Thing, as there is no @Things. 4. @Things was added to the API when using 5-7 as a baseline, but 8 is now the new baseline. In the case of @Cont, the annotation is added and the consuming code is probably the same (TBD whether it still has to check for elt.getAnnotation(Thing.class) if there is just one). In the case of @Rep, @Things is @Deprecated but still checked for in addition to repeated @Thing. #1 is the normal case for the next several years. #3 is the normal case in the long run. #2 would probably be unusual; #4 is likely to be common for a few years. In no case is the situation much different for the widespread annotating code, except that in case #3 the API user sees smaller and simpler Javadoc (also in case #4 if -nodeprecated is used). For the much rarer consuming code, there is no difference in case #1, @Cont is slightly easier in case #2 and #4, and @Rep is slightly easier in case #3. The problem is the fact, that I am doing double compilation (after first compilation I get the textual representation of produced AST and that is in fact used for visualization purposes). Double compilation is needed because I want to visualize all the compiler sugar (default constructor, effectively final variables in ARM, code generated for enum, ...). The problem is that javac's pretty printer (I guess it is pretty printer) after calling CompilationUnitTree.toString() produces in some specific situations code that is not able to compile: 1.) it transforms public class FullClassUsage { { new ArrayList(10) { { add("123"); } }; } } into public class FullClassUsage { public FullClassUsage() { super(); } { new ArrayList(10){ (int x0) { super(x0); } { add("123"); } }; } } the (int x0) is the problem. 2.) when using together with enum types it transforms: public enum SimpleEnum { ENUM_CONSTANT_1, ENUM_CONSTANT_2 } into public enum SimpleEnum { /*public static final*/ ENUM_CONSTANT_1 /* = new SimpleEnum() */, /*public static final*/ ENUM_CONSTANT_2 /* = new SimpleEnum() */; private SimpleEnum() { super(); } } that is really weird. Not only it generates comments ??? but also a super call causing the code not to compile. I would also assume that it will generate all the enum type code (constructors with n+2 arguments, valueOf() factory method, extending java.lang.Enum, ...). Is there any reason why it produces that weird code? Is there any better way to get the Textual representation of CompilationUnitTree (using pretty printer) that will compile in both of these examples ? //Martin -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... To assist in that task, a more recent development has been to try and make the output be compilable as well. The difficulty is that, despite first appearances, the AST is not a direct, literal representation of the source text and some transformations on the tree have already occurred by the time the pretty printer gets invoked. The use of comments has been introduced as a way of showing the parts of the AST which are present but which prevent compilation. It would seem you have found a couple of corner cases that need to be fixed. -- Jon On 01/29/2012 06:07 AM, Crazy Java wrote: > It looks like the Enum problem should alreadz be fixed according to > bug 6902720 > (http://hg.openjdk.java.net/jdk7/tl/langtools/rev/b1bb8164a9bd, > http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6902720), but it is > not. > > 2012/1/29 R?mi Forax > > > On 01/29/2012 01:40 PM, Crazy Java wrote: > > Hi, > as part of the javac AST Visualizer project, I have some > difficulties with javac's pretty printer. Was thinking the same. The bridge method question is probably the easiest - I think the pretty printer should not print (at least not by default) synthetic members. They will be re-generated if you recompile the source emitted by the printer. [Btw I think the same treatments should be applied to the body of an anonymous inner class - Printer should not print out the whole class declaration - only the methods explicitly overridden in the source]. With Let expression, as everything that happens after lowering, there is a problem - in the sense that Lower alters the shape of the code in an unrecoverable (for now ;-)) way. What about inner classes desugared into toplevel ones? Do we want Pretty to generate stuff containing Foo$1 ? Well, probably not. Depending on the degree of accuracy we want out of Pretty, there could be different solutions - we could make small adjustment to the AST before printing in out, in order to remove the redundant stuff (i.e. synthetic methods) - it would be great if those adjustments could be parameterized on some compiler flags, so that the user gets to choose which ones to apply in their specific case. But there will be cases in which the adjustment will be hard (as in the case of LetExpr or inner classes), and you somehow need a pointer to the untranslated AST to get out of the mess.
