How to serialize elements (or to lookup up for them efficiently) ?

I am looking for a way to serialize elements between builds,
or, as it looks no such mechanism exists out of the box, I am looking for a
way to encode their location and being able to retrieve the new element in
the new build using this location.

What would be the best way to do this ?
