Obscure build failure

I am trying to build a fresh new unmodified copy of OpenJDK, and have run into the following obscure error.  I’m using JDK 23.0.1 as the boot JDK.
The significant line is: 
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ClassFormatError: StackMapTable format error: bad verification type

This is on a Mac, with latest Sonoma OS, and latest Xcode, although the failure is more in the Java/JDK parts of the system.  Could it be related to the new classfile library?
