I should have checked before posting -- exactly
this bandaid already exists in current version,
disguised by using  "ArrayList.this" as one of these fields.
As long as people restrict sublist accesses to get and set,
they are not hitting penalty proportional to depth.
I don't know how to do any better while retaining
compatibility.
