Hang on a second...

In SendaoYan's defense: Either we have a policy that says copyright years
must be updated, or we don't. Which is it?

There is plenty of room for debate about the policy (and I agree with you
that the policy could in fact be wasting everyone's time for no actual
legal purpose), but at any given point in time, whatever the policy is, we
should be following it, right?

Or - if the policy is wrong, let's change it!
