dio uart for non-embedded systems

Sorry if this turns out to be a common question, but I searched around
for some time and couldn't find anything.

Has anybody already attempted to compile the usart provider part for use
on an "ordinary" Linux system (e.g. Ubuntu/x86_64)? It would be nice to
be able to use such a system for development. All UART/USB devices can
be connected to such a system as well as to a Raspbery Pi.
