I'm not sure if there's anything else I need to do to begin contributing - I am unable to access the OpenJDK bug system ( https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/secure/Dashboard.jspa) with my mailing list credentials. I know that there's the adoption-discuss mailing list - I will try sending out an email to that list for next steps. I have a BS in physics and an MS in computer science. I've been in the industry for six years working as a software engineer. I've worked at several companies all of which have supported web apps built with some Java tech stack variant. I've written in Java 6-8 and absolutely love java 8's shift to a more functional paradigm. I'm extremely excited to be collaborating with everyone on the one project that matters the most to us developers. I would be happy to take on any task, small or big. The Bug database is still currently restricted (basically to avoid the flood from the millions of Java developers), but can you at least see the issues listed there?. To get full access to the bug system you need to be an Author (http://openjdk.java.net/bylaws#author). You can work your way up to being an Author (http://openjdk.java.net/bylaws#contributor) by submitting patches (http://openjdk.java.net/contribute/). The Adoption group can definitely help guide you through that process (it's a little tricky the first time)! As usual, I would suggest checking out some of the newer, smaller OpenJDK Projects first, as they tend to be the easier to make a mark in than larger ones. See http://mail.openjdk.java.net/pipermail/adoption-discuss/2015-November/001225.html for a longer explanation of how to start contributing successfully, rather than just jumping into the wild river and hoping for the best ;) For example, the Code Tools Project has a nice pool of smaller, distinct tools one can start contributing to without having to become an expert on JDK development right away. cheers, dalibor topic -- Dalibor Topic | Principal Product Manager Phone: +494089091214 | Mobile: +491737185961 ORACLE Deutschland B.V. & Co. What is not yet clear to me is how to deliver that contribution. As cr.openjdk.java.net seems to be limited to users with push access, where to make a patch available for review/consumption? Quoting from the section referenced above: "The code change itself, relative to an existing changeset in the appropriate Mercurial repository. The preferred form is generated by Mercurial's hg export command, with the -g option so that file renames are tracked correctly. The output of hg diff -g is also acceptable, and in the worst case traditional unified diffs (-u) are okay too, at least for simple changes." > Also, as only authors seem to be allowed to comment issues in JIRA, how to contribute there (I would like to at least answer questions that were raised on issues I have created via the Webbug interface)? The easiest way to do that is to start a separate thread on a mailing list around an issue. Broadly speaking, mailing lists are for discussion, while bug trackers are for facts. Keeping these two separated allows developers to come back to issues later without having to slog through years of potentially tangential discussions on the bug in a bug tracker.
