Aleksey answered the technical part, so I'll add the OCA part: since one 
can't contribute other people's code, the changes need to be authored by 
yourself.

That's usually not an issue, since the authors of other changes can sign 
the OCA to submit their own pull requests, but sometimes, with long 
running projects, there may be a stack of changes of sufficiently 
complicated provenance, that it may be simpler to keep it separately 
maintained in the downstream project.
