Message-ID: Hi. We are investigating migrating mail.openjdk.org away from Mailman 2. The OpenJDK mailing lists (mail.openjdk.org) have run on Mailman version 2 since the OpenJDK Community was founded. Mailman 2 moved to maintenance-only mode in 2015. Today it is considered legacy software, used by a dwindling number of communities. Having surveyed the alternatives, the best candidate for replacing Mailman 2 appears to be Mailman 3. Does anyone know of other alternatives we should consider? Thanks, Iris From davidalayachew at gmail.com Wed Dec 10 23:43:36 2025 From: davidalayachew at gmail.com (David Alayachew) Date: Wed, 10 Dec 2025 18:43:36 -0500 Subject: Migrating mail.openjdk.org from Mailman 2 to ? In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hallelujah! The version of mailman that we are on is an obstacle in all the worst ways. So much feedback hasn't been given on the mailing list *PURELY* because of how outdated and broken the tools are. For suggestions, I guess LSoft's ListServ? It feels overkill. But that said, just go to mailman 3. I only suggest LSoft because alternatives were requested. Mm3 is the obvious correct choice here. The obvious pain points are gone in 3. Plus, it adds a whole bunch of super useful features WHILE simplifying the migration process. For example, it has its own search feature built-in -- something desperately overdue, so much so that community members started building their own solution to fill in the gaps [1]. Thanks again Elliott Barlas! Thank you for your time and consideration. Thanks for the additional suggestion. From our investigation, Apache Pony Mail is currently incubating, and the latest release appears to be 0.11 from 2019-04-20. Pony Mail focuses on browsing and searching mail archives and relies on Mailman 3 or other mail list system for active list management. We didn't really see any significant benefits of using it over Mailman 3. Best, Iris -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:
