We have discussed this in the context of the timezone database, font
configuration and Xinerama (the dreaded XCB bug). Generally speaking
this has been problematic because have wanted to keep coherent
cross-platform behavior. It seems, however, there has been a little
more willingness to consider the dependence on system libraries.

To the extent that IcedTea is a chance to experiment now with
this sort of thing perhaps it would be a could place to try
out these ideas? If so please keep a list of this class of
"system library dependencies" so we can easily find these solutions.
