Freetype2-devel in nonstandard directory

Lillian,
This change fixed the configure part, however, it doesn't seem to address
the issue of building the checkfreetype program. I am not able to build
this since the includes are not found. I pkg-config was used during
configure, is it also possible to have it be used during the build process?
