FREETYPE2_INC_DIR - Where is this used?

Hi,
I see that FREETYPE2_INC_DIR is passed down to the OpenJDK build process but
I cannot find it being used in the makefiles.  I found that OpenJDK
uses ALT_FREETYPE_HEADERS_PATH and ALT_FREETYPE_LIB_PATH.  Are these
related?
I am having problems with the build as the freetype2 headers cannot be
found.  The configure script finds the headers but the build cannot.
