That sounds ok as long as it only applies to bug fixes such as this
and the patches are still posted to the list with explanation.  I
don't like the idea of random commits without discussion and certainly
any commits which alter the build machinery (configure.ac,
Makefile.am, etc.) need approval on 6, as a lot of people rely on
being able to build.  I'd also suggest that in the long run someone
else learns how this works so Ed's work gets appropriate review.
