This update more concerns gcc, but an update here is appropriate since progress
on the gcc route necessarily affects success here.

My progress is impeded with the gcj.  I finally got gcj to compile, but have
run into what appear run-time and/or configuration errors -- the test suite
results had over 2600 PASS and 6 FAIL, so I'm guessing the gcj basically works.
 However, I cannot seem to invoke it against a simple test class.  I've logged
a bug:
