[Bug 281] web100 applet fails to display buttons

This bug seems to be partially related to my/the bug in <a
href="http://icedtea.classpath.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=263">263</a>.

Both bugs share the commonality in that the event processing appears to cease
after less than 1 second after loading the applet.

However with the web100 applet, I'm not experiencing the backwards text
situation going on in bug 263.

I do see continuous snowing in this applet: http://www.v-workshops.com/java/
(until the snow pile has filled up the entire applet window)
