The icedtea plugin creates fifos at
~/.icedteaplugin/icedtea-appletviewer-to-plugin and
~/.icedteaplugin/icedtea-plugin-to-appletviewer.  So if $HOME is in an AFS
filesystem, which doesn’t support fifos, the plugin doesn’t work at all. 
For example, this makes the plugin unusable for MIT Athena machines.

The plugin needs the ability to fall back to creating fifos somewhere in, say,
/tmp.
