I'm seeing that I have a USE flag option:
gcj      Enable building with gcj (The GNU Compiler for the Javatm Programming
Language)
Maybe I need I need to emerge, again, the packaged gcc compiler using the "gcj"
use flag rather than building from the downloaded source from this web site. 
The reason being that someone in Gentoo may have finessed the problem starting
this bug (and others).  I'll try and advise.
