As to the branch, we already spoke about this on IRC, but I think it bears repeating
here.  This is a branch, not the release itself.  Once branched, we can start testing
the packaging of this release (ebuilds, RPMs, debs) and make any further modifications we find are
necessary.  When we're happy, we release.

One sticking point is the release does need to work with 7.  It doesn't right now.
