Backport S6438179 to IcedTea6 1.8 and 1.9

Hi,

I would like to backport the fix for S6438179 [1] from IcedTea6 head 
(changeset 1fc64b023005) to IcedTea6 1.9 and 1.8.

Any thoughts?
