I'd like to backport this to 1.9.  I've already done the backport for
the Gentoo 1.9 package and it applies pretty cleanly with just one of
the Makefile.am changes having to be applied manually and
params-cast-size-t.patch having to be removed manually (due to doko's
changes to it, which you'll then get for free).  

Ok to backport?
