RFC: Backport PR542 to icedtea6 1.9 and 1.8

Hi,

The attached patches backport the fix [1] for PR542[2] to IcedTea6 1.8 
and 1.9. It solves a bug that can manifest in other applets too (see 
RH684974 [3]). Any thoughts or concerns?
