OK, I'm doing a bit more digging to try to find out the real cause of this.
We should be able to find some build flags that are compatible with all
GNU/Linux distros so that this sort of thing doesn't happen again.

OK.  I don't understand the "assuming it still builds" issue, though.
It always has built for me.
