I've managed to track this one down to a badly configured kernel. I'll be
having words with whoever decided to enable CONFIG_COMPAT_BRK.

Yeah... :| The good news is that this one can simply be adjusted at runtime
with /proc/sys/kernel/randomize_va_space so I could see the effect immediately.
