Also, 'Malfomred' -> 'malformed'. Will this test be internationalised as the
text in comment 7 was? How will it be displayed? My reading of the patch is
that it will just be the exception message, not a dialog.

Yes, I agree with James that this is something that should be relayed to the
user at run-time. A message from configure is going to be lost in build logs on
the servers of the distribution in many cases.
