The kernel issue was bug #2693.

I would love to try a more recent kernel and I've poked the Gentoo PPC guys
about it a couple of times but they want someone to be physically present just
in case. Understandable but they don't seem to have any time frame for that.

Strangely the issue doesn't affect icedtea 3 so I'm happy enough to just skip
Java 7 on this platform.
