Thanks for the reply!    

I'm N00b(ish), running Mint Mate 18.2 in dual boot.  Out of my depth so unable
to confirm. 
Have marked as duplicate to close it out as I'm 99% sure you have a better
handle on it than I.

Only worthy reference to IcedTea-Web-1.7.1 I could find rattles off multiple
dependencies, some not native to Mint via its Update Manager.  Whole new world.

I'm sure it's simple once you know how, but not there yet... 

Don't know about the old machines, but my main box has an ASUS P5K with Intel
E6850 so should be able..

More capable distro?  Suggested reading?
