Use `make` to build the repo

 - Merge remote-tracking branch 'upstream/master' into use-make
 - fix copy-paste issues
 - fix dependency
 - change default `build` target to include `images`
 - update copyright year
 - Add version-numbers
 - Convert to using GNU make as the preferred build
 - Allow empty fragments in URLs
