It works with the patched[1] Eclipse 4.3 and Eclipse 4.4 I20140402-0100 on my machine. What exact version of Eclipse 4.4 are you using? I suspect it’s Eclipse 4.4M6 (which is not Java 8 enabled). The error message is unfortunately a bit useless.
