@dholmes-ora Collective nouns are ... interesting. :) Apparently it's even confusing to native speakers. The formal rule is that singular should be used when the collective is acting as one (which is the case here), but as plural when members are acting individually. As one can imagine, such a rule has quite some room for subjectiveness. :)
