speed of simple loops: comparison to other language

Hi again,

Immediately after sending off the last message, I realize I misunderstood
the -server switch to be a compile-time switch.

Indeed, with the java run-time -server switch, the Java code is 
competitive with the C and C++.  This is all I need for my purposes.

For now I hold by all the other stuff I said, although it just doesn't
matter so much!
