I really like this cleanup, especially the removal of variant 32/64 files (a long term aspiration) and of course the taming of that big blotch of ifdefs at the top of every file.
The macrology must be made very clear. Comments should give several examples. I agree that the macro name should refer to concatenation. I trust someone can come up with the prettiest possible formulation, which isn't saying much; cpp code is no beauty pageant.
