Quick question

Async exceptions can be delivered to a thread during a safepoint so
yes you need to check for a pending exception. Check out
JavaThread::check_and_handle_async_exceptions and
JavaThread::handle_special_runtime_exit_condition and
generate_handler_blob in sharedRuntime_<arch>.cpp.  Generally speaking
if you call into the runtime for any reason you should be checking for
pending exceptions.
